Lives and works in Aix-la-Chapelle, Germany
Karl “Charly” Holzinger was born on November 26, 1948, in Überlingen, on the banks of Lake Constance.
He has lived and worked in Aix-la-Chapelle since completing his studies in chemistry there. As a chemist, his contact with different chemicals and metals along with his diverse interests led him first to become a painter and jewellery designer and then a sculptor and finally an “experimental sculptor”.
His pieces are the result of the contrast between the combination of organic materials, like wood or paper, and inorganic materials, hard, yet joinable, like smelted metals, stones and ceramics.
Since 2008 his favourite material has been undulated cardboard after becoming fascinated by its solidity and lightness. During the “birth” of these objects, his artistic ideas give way to the particularity of the material that often carries the artist in a direction that he did not foresee.
