Spiritual, playful and enigmatic, Cole Morgan’s paintings seem like mysterious maps to the unexplored areas of the human mind. Imagination is predominant in his oeuvre. Lines evaporate into droplets whilst words mock us outright before disappearing behind ghostly expanses of colour. Despite the seemingly unchecked appearance of the unexpected, each painting consists of a motif that has been meticulously forged with care. In fact, the artist says that “every square millimeter of canvas is controlled”, adding that “there are no ‘accidents’ in my compositions”. Through this intense process of creation, layer after layer, of modelling and of shaping, Cole Morgan imbues his work with irresistible tension between shapes and vagueness, abstraction and representation.
Cole Morgan was born in Buffalo, New York, in 1950. He studied at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque before settling in Europe to train at the Centro d’Arte Graf co in Florence, Italy, and the De Vrije Akademie in The Hague, Netherlands. He currently lives and works in Antwerp, Belgium. His work is exhibited in Europe, but also in his native United States.
