I have always loved cardboard, an omnipresent material that I have used in many ways over the years (…) By regularly searching for this material as I wandered the streets, I became increasingly sensitive to the aesthetic that it already held for me (…) This led me to paint numerous still lifes of cardboard boxes. These still lifes are like a synthesis of all my obsessions and thoughts; a synthesis of what drives much of our human world (…) These cardboard boxes, descendants of our ancient amphorae transcended into paintings and vanities, always end up being evocative yet familiar, to the surprise of those who look at them. Some see them as a reflection on consumer society, consumption and globalisation. Others perceive them differently, wondering about their contents (what mystery lies within a closed box!), or seeing in them what they desire. These cardboard paintings can mean many things, but they have also given me the opportunity to paint sensual nuances, like skin in cubes! I told myself that through the cardboard boxes, I loved flesh, the body; our urban world, so ambiguous, and the light that reveals it. ” (artist’s quote, 2017)
