Javier CARRO TEMBOURY

Intercontainers (L’abreuvoir)

2023

Second-hand ceramics, industrial cutting
120 x 38 x 16 cm

This work is part of the Intercontainers series, a project that Javier Carro Temboury begun in 2022 following a very specific protocol. The artist first collects ceramics found at markets or gathered from others. All of these containers, from different geographical origins, bear the marks of specific uses and craftsmanship.

The recovery of these receptacles highlights both the diverse and universal nature of ceramics and the decisive technological advance that its development has been for most societies. The ceramics chosen by the artist are then cut with precision, always following the same pattern, thus making it possible to connect all the Intercontainers to each other. Bearing the traces and memories of different times and places, the Intercontainers subtly speak to us of the people who held, touched and made them, and question the way in which we receive and understand each other’s cultures. Here, the remains of a goose-shaped dish handle reminded the artist of a drinking trough, which gave the work its title.
