Sarah CAIN

Born in 1979 in Albany, USA
Lives and works in Los Angeles, USA

Sarah Cain’s work often stretches beyond the two dimensional plane; she paints on found objects and loosely hung swaths of canvas, which are closer to installation art than traditional painting. “At the core of my work is a challenge to abstract painting – an attempt to expand it,” Sarah Cain has said. The artist does not limit herself to any style or technique, combining hard-edge abstractions with loose, gestural strokes, and embellishing her pieces with found objects or craft materials.  Her work likewise can range from very small works on paper to immense works on site that scale the surfaces of the museum.  Cain studied at UC Berkeley, the San Francisco Art Institute, Parsons School of Design in Paris and the Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture. She is part of a new generation of painters who go beyond the usual conventions. She has attracted attention at many biennales and museums as well as internationally renowned galleries.
