MONUMENTS // Kirin HDP
Statuary marble, pigments, ed. 1/3
26 x 26 x 37 cm
Artist Luca Resta bases his sculptural practice on his own collection of packaging and disposable items, which now includes over 1,500 items. It was from this collection that he drew this cardboard box from the Japanese beer brand Kirin, interested in the way its motifs (lettering, yellow dragon, etc.) are repeated on each of its sides. The work appears somewhat damaged to our eyes, like a well-used object bearing the traces of its use. Thus, in a play on replication rather than strict copying, each side of the sculpture appears identical, while always differing slightly from the previous one. The artist skilfully transforms Carrara marble into cardboard, exploring the narrative potential of this ordinary crate and questioning a noble and sculptural material par excellence. The work playfully references the writers David Hume, Gilles Deleuze and Bruno Patino (‘HDP’) in its title and on its label, all of whom have written and thought about the concept of repetition.
