SUPPORT FOR EXHIBITION SCENOGRAPHY – “SHIP OF FOOLS” – FRAC GRAND LARGE, DUNKERQUE

2022

The RAJA Contemporary Art Collection is happy to support the exhibition “Ship of Fools. Objects as parteners in transport” which runs from April 2 to December 31, 2022 at the Frac Grand Large (Dunkerque), curated by Mathilde Sauzet and designed by Julien Carretero.

The result of a collaboration with Gent’s Design Museum, the exhibition brings together objects and films by artists from the collections of both institutions, linked in a poetic and subjective way. Echoing the eponymous painting by Jérôme Bosch (1475), the exhibition “Ship of Fools” focuses on the transport craze – the steadily evolving mobility of objects, materials and people – from the 1950s up to the present day.

“The objects making up the Design Museum Gent collection embody both concrete transport, moving from one point to another, and perspectives of transformation, transition and translation, passages from one state to another.” Transport is as much physical and material – the exhibition echoes the reality of the Dunkirk region and its industrial port, which sees goods from all over the world pass through daily – as it is emotional and intimate.

The scenography, designed by Julien Carretero, features RAJA products such as cardboard boxes acting as pedestals for the various objects on display. It borrows from the plastic vocabulary of freight, evoking a transit and sorting zone: “And it also involves unpacking, the inventory of a collection placed in an order according to its narrative potential, as opposed to the norms of classification usually applied to objects.”
